Dermapen micro-needling is mostly used for treating acne scarring, and can also be used to treat occurring acne.
The technique (also known as needle dermabrasion) creates a series of wounds or channels into the dermis. As the skin starts to heal, it releases growth factors and produces collagen, both of which help to decrease acne breakouts.
The skin becomes thicker with the creation of new collagen and elastin fibres, so visibly improving skin texture.
The micro-needling device creates a controlled skin ‘injury’ by puncturing the skin.
The procedure encourages the body to produce new collagen and elastin, as it fills and heals these microscopic wounds. This helps to improve the appearance of scars and stretch marks, and reduces pores.
The channels created can also improve the penetration of vitamins A and C creams into the skin by about 1000 times. Vitamins A and C stimulate skin renewal, helping to make the skin appear fresher and younger.
The Dermapen device uses an array of fine needles to pierce the skin to a controlled depth just below the outer layer.
As a resurfacing treatment for active acne, the ‘micro-channels’ created by the needles can also be used to deliver vitamin A creams that fight the causes and symptoms of acne.

Micro-needling can make your skin appear fresher and younger, as well as help to reduce pores and improve the appearance of scars and stretch marks.
The treatment is also known as skin needling, collagen induction therapy (CIT) and percutaneous collagen induction (PCI).
Micro-needling is a minimally-invasive, skin-rejuvenation treatment that uses a battery-powered or cord-powered device containing very fine needles.
The needles stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin, and facilitate the penetration into the skin of rejuvenating vitamins A and C.
Micro-needling can make your skin appear fresher and younger, as well as help to reduce pores and improve the appearance of scars and stretch marks.
The procedure can take anything from 10 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the area we are treating and whether you’re having a topical anaesthetic.
You may need to allow a further 45 minutes to an hour for the anaesthetic to take effect.
t is safe to resume normal activities after the procedure, but your skin will appear pink or red and you may have areas of bruising.
You may also notice scabbing in the first couple of days, which you can cover with makeup.
Some swelling is also common for the first few days, and may last for 7 to 10 days.
As micro-needling does not use chemicals to treat the skin, only stimulating the body to produce collagen and elastin with fine needles, it is considered very safe. However, it should only be performed by a trained professional. Micro-needling can treat areas of skin that would not be suitable for other procedures, such as peeling and laser resurfacing, particularly around the eyes, mouth, hands and chest.
