Laser Hyperpigmentation Treatment at Dr MediSpa

We expose the pigmented area to short pulses of highly concentrated light, which breaks down the melanin that is responsible for pigmentation in the skin.

The melanin is effectively absorbed by the body, reducing the visibility of the dark patches of skin.

The treatment is quick and effective, and most patients only need a course of 3 to 6 sessions, at intervals of 4 to 6 weeks.

Is this treatment suitable for me?

Laser treatment for hyperpigmentation is suitable for most people.

However, before starting any procedure we carry out a full consultation with you, to confirm your medical history and complete an assessment of the area that needs treating.

This will allow us to determine your suitability for the treatment, how many sessions you may need and the expected results.

Frequently asked questions

Is there downtime or any side effects?

The treatment is not painful and at the most, you may feel some very slight discomfort.

Depending on your skin type, you may notice some redness and swelling in the treated area – similar to mild sunburn – for up to 48 hours.

You may also notice that the treated area appears darker, and there is some flaking and scabbing of the treated skin, in about 5 to 7 days after treatment.

This is a normal effect of the treatment, as the melanin continues to be broken down and absorbed, and should disappear shortly after.

Which conditions can be treated?

  • hyperpigmentation
  • age spots
  • melasma
  • freckles.

How long do the results last?

Results vary for each person, according to their skin type, but we normally expect the results to last up to a year.

Will I need aftercare?

You may need to apply a cooling pack to your skin for the first few hours after treatment, to help reduce any discomfort.

You may also find an aloe vera gel helpful.

If you are wearing makeup after the treatment, we suggest you only use mineral makeup – and only if there is no blistering of the skin.

We also advise you to treat your skin gently and:

  • avoid sun exposure (to minimise the possibility of hyperpigmentation or darker pigmentation)
  • use SPF50 sunscreen
  • not pick or scratch the treated skin
  • not take a hot bath, or have exercise or heat treatments, for the first 24 hours.
