Acne scarring can be a life-long reminder of acne, long after the condition itself has disappeared. It’s most commonly caused when an inflamed lesion such as a papule, pustule or cyst causes damage to the dermis. To combat this damage, the skin forms new collagen fibres, creating an uneven, mottled effect on the skin. Both men and women can suffer with acne scarring; many people find the appearance of acne scarring embarrassing and emotionally upsetting. Finding the right acne scarring treatment can be hard.

At Dr. MediSpa in Loughton and Harley Street, we understand that during or after experiencing acne, you want to be able achieve smoother, clearer skin. Our medical director, Dr. Munir Somji, has put countless hours into acne scarring treatment research; he’s chosen some of the most effective options available to restore your confidence and revitalise the look of your skin.

Acne Scarring Treatment in London and Essex – Your Options

Subcision involves using specialised needles to dissect acne scarring from underneath the skin. It is a non-surgical treatment which can be used effectively in the beginning of a course of treatments to lift the scar and promote collagen induction.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is considered a more ‘natural’ non-surgical treatment. It utilizes your own growth factors found within your blood to heal and replenish the skin. A sample of your blood is taken and separated in a specially designed centrifuge. When the PRP is re-injected back into the areas of concern, the growth factors work in synergy with the tissues, promoting collagen formation and encouraging a healing response.

Platelet-rich Fibrin Matrix contains fibrin in addition to platelets and acts a mesh for prolonged growth factor release in comparison to PRP. This means the effects are more marked. Dr. Somji is one of the leaders in this newest regenerative medicine technology, and now offers this to all patients with acne scarring because of the superb results it provides.

Dermapen Micro-needling is a hugely effective, device-led treatment which utilises the skin’s healing powers to resurface and smooth out the appearance of acne scars. Using a device which creates tiny punctures in to the skin, new collagen is formed as a result and over a course of treatment, the skin is repaired and revitalised.

iPixel Laser Treatment uses non-ablative (non-damaging), fractional technology to heat the deeper layers of the skin which in-turn causes a healing response. The outer layers of skin are resurfaced and other tissues remain unaffected and unharmed. Unlike ablative laser treatments, iPixel does not offer lengthy downtime or discomfort. A course of treatment is needed for optimum results.

TCA CROSS Chemical Peels involve the use of highly-concentrated trichloroetic acid (TCA) on the surface of the acne scar. TCA reacts with the skin in a way that leads to the formation of new collagen fibres. This raises the level of the scar on the skin’s surface, smoothing the appearance of the skin and scar indentations. Ice pick scars, which tend not to react well to acne scarring treatments such as laser, react most effectively with TCA CROSS peels. A course of treatment is recommended for the best results.

Punch Biopsy Excision is reserved for the deepest of acne scars. This involves surgically excising the scar and using dissolvable stitches to close the small wound made by the procedure. A smaller, linear scar is likely to remain present and can be treated with a range of non-surgical methods, later on.
