Fat freezing – Cryotherapy

Fat freezing – also known as cryolipolysis or cryotherapy – is a safe, non-surgical alternative to liposuction for the removal of localised areas of excess fat.

Fat cells in the targeted areas are destroyed and naturally eliminated from the body, but the surrounding skin is undamaged.

It is particularly effective for those hard-to-shift areas of fat, for example under the arms or chin, around the neck or waist, or on the abdomen or thighs.

Frequently asked questions

How does fat freezing work?

The targeted areas of fat are cooled to near freezing – close to 4°C.

This causes fat cells to crystallise, break apart and die, but does not damage the surrounding skin.

The body naturally processes and eliminates the dead fat cells over the course of a few weeks.

What areas can be treated with fat freezing?

Fat freezing is designed for removing localised areas of unwanted fat – those hard-to-shift areas for example under the arms or chin, and around the neck or waist, or on the abdomen or thighs.

Many people choose fat freezing as a non-surgical alternative to liposuction.

However, fat freezing is not suitable a weight-loss solution for people who are obese.

What happens during the treatment?

During the treatment, we apply a gel pad and cooling device to the targeted area of fat.

You may feel an initial sensation of intense cold, and a tugging or slight pinching as a vacuum draws fatty tissue into the applicator cup. But both sensations usually subside in 5 or 10 minutes as the area becomes numb.

Most procedures take up to an hour, but the time will vary depending on the number of areas being treated. (It may also be possible to treat two areas simultaneously.)

During the treatment you can relax, read, work on your laptop or have a nap.

You may only need one session to achieve satisfactory results, as cryolipolysis is believed to reduce the fat in some treated areas by up to 20%.

How long do the results last?

You may see some changes as early as three weeks after treatment.

But the results should be more visible in the two to three months after the procedure, as your body continues to flush out the dead fat cells.

What are the side effects of fat freezing?

The most common side effects of fat freezing include redness, bruising, tenderness and itchy, stinging or sensitive skin.

These effects are temporary, however, and should subside within a few days or weeks.

There are other, more rare, side effects but we will discuss these with you during your consultation for the treatment.
