The procedure takes about 30 minutes, and does not need any anaesthetic.
The pigmented or vascular lesion is exposed to short pulses of visible light, which raises the temperature in the area of concentrated haemoglobin high enough to damage and break down the vessel wall.
The damaged blood vessels are then absorbed by the body, making them less visible or destroying them completely.
