Nowadays, it’s not just women that are delving in to the world of non-surgical anti-ageing treatments and men are now becoming more aware and concerned about their looks, as they get older. At DrMediSpa in Loughton, Essex, we applaud the men of the UK, looking to maintain a youthful, fresh and natural appearance and offer advice on the best possible choices to make when it comes to anti-ageing treatments.

At DrMediSpa, it’s all about subtlety and natural results and one of the most common and effective treatments for dynamic lines and wrinkles in both men and women, is that of the use of Botox ( Botulinum Toxin Type A ). Botox is actually a brand name and the substance Botulinum Toxin Type A is the true title for the substance used in this treatment. This is administered by a medical professional only, using small injections at various points on the face, where the wrinkles appear. It’s a relatively painless and very affordable treatment with long lasting results.

Botulinum Toxin Type A has been around for many years and used to treat conditions such as muscle spasms in children, bladder weakness and hyperhidrosis (excess sweating) but the most well-known use of this substance is for the treatment of dynamic wrinkles (the wrinkles we see when we smile, frown and use facial expression).

If you are fearful that the use of Botulinum Toxin Type A could leave you with a frozen or ‘wind tunnel’ effect, commonly seen when a poorly trained practitioner administers the substance, you will be pleased to know that Dr Somji, the medical director at DrMediSpa is highly skilled and experienced in administering this treatment to ensure that you will still be able to have expression and will not look ‘overdone’ or ‘surprised’. The injection technique is as important as the product being used and the common issue that people have is when too much product is used and in areas which cause the eyebrows to drop or the forehead to look too shiny and plastic. This is not the case with the treatment offered at DrMediSpa and for our patients, we advise on the ‘less is more’ approach for a fresh and natural look.

Botulinum Toxin treatment takes around 5 minutes to administer and although you will need a consultation with the doctor to discuss your medical history and any medication you are taking, in general, the treatment is open to anyone over the age of 18 with concerns about dynamic wrinkles and most commonly used in the over 30s. There is no downtime with the treatment and although you may have some small lumps immediately afterwards, these should disperse within 30 minutes following the procedure.

You’ll be advised not to bend forward, rub the area or do any heavy physical activity for at least 4 hours after treatment, as avoiding the product migrating to areas such as the eye lids is important at this stage. However, you can return to your normal daily activities following treatment and no one will know you have had the procedure.

The treatment will take between 24 hours and a week to take effect and you may wish to return to the clinic to have a top up if you feel there are any areas that you would like a little more product. Treatment with Botulinum Toxin Type A can last up to 4 to 6 months and after such time, you will probably wish to return for more treatment as you will start to notice the dynamic lines re appearing. On the plus side, the treatment can delay more lines appearing and actually prevent further ageing.

The treatment of Botulinum Toxin Type A is now exceptionally affordable and many find that the effect is better than any expensive cream or lotion and would not be without their regular Botox treatments, to maintain a youthful and pleasing facial appearance.
