Most women in the UK are concerned about their appearance in some way and or many of us, the prospect of a cosmetic treatment to enhance or improve our looks is not as daunting a thought, as it may have been in the past. With improvements in safety regulations, innovative and emerging technologies and techniques and attractive prices which make cosmetic treatments more accessible to everyone; considering a non-surgical treatment to delay the effects of ageing, to enhance a certain feature or to make subtle improvements to imperfections is now common practice.

The face is the most considered area when it comes to cosmetic work and in recent years, dermal fillers have become a popular choice for those seeking to enhance and improve their looks. Dr Munir Somji, the medical director at DrMediSpa in Loughton, Essex explains 5 reasons why dermal lip fillers can be a good choice for those looking to naturally enhance their youthful appearance.

1. The lip area can show age very quickly
When we look at someone’s face, along with the eyes, we tend to focus on the lip and mouth area when speaking with one another. The lips can indicate ageing as much as wrinkles around the eyes or sagging cheeks. A thin lip area can exacerbate the ageing process as we associate plump and hydrated lips with that of a young person (think of babies with their cute, dewy pouts). Use of dermal fillers in the lip area will increase volume, hydration and remove unwanted wrinkles, improving the overall look of the face.

2. Dermal fillers are quick to administer
Unlike most plastic surgery, dermal fillers result in very little downtime for the patient and can be administered in around ten minutes. Although there may be a little swelling and / or bruising, following treatment, there is no need for a hospital stay and you can go back to work and your daily routine straight after treatment. This makes dermal fillers a wise choice for those with busy lifestyles.

3. Dermal fillers have an excellent safety record
90% of the dermal fillers now used by reputable doctors consist of a substance called Hyaluronic Acid. This acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body which means it is not foreign to the system. Safety in cosmetic surgery and the products used means that allergic reactions with the use of dermal fillers are extremely rare. Dr Somji insists on only using products that have been trialled and proven for their safety and efficacy and is a highly skilled practitioner in his field, ensuring that his patients can be confident of fantastic results.

4. Dermal fillers can shape and improve
Dermal fillers in the lip area aren’t just used for anti-ageing. Some patients find that a thin lip area can mean the facial features are unbalanced and would like to improve this area in order to have a more sexy and attractive pout. Although Dr Somji will not administer dermal fillers on anyone under the age of 18, dermal fillers can be considered by those wishing to improve the lip area to give a more balanced appearance to the face, even if they aren’t concerned with ageing.

5. Dermal fillers are temporary
Unlike permanent lip augmentation, dermal fillers do disperse naturally in the human body over time and this usually takes around 6 to 8 months. However, this means that you can vary the treatment each time you return, having less or more product, a varying injection technique depending on the shape you wish to achieve and you can alter treatment depending on how your face and lips naturally age. Most HA dermal fillers are reversible with the use of a substance called Hyalaise and therefore if you decide that you don’t like the result, Dr Somji can reverse the treatment for you, though this is a very rare occurrence as the doctor will use his expertise in consultation and treatment, in order to give you the desired look and result you wish to achieve. Although you should think very carefully before having any cosmetic treatment, unlike permanent surgery, dermal fillers are more versatile and not permanent.
