Micro-needling for active acne

Dermapen micro-needling for active acne

Dermapen micro-needling is normally associated with treating acne scarring, but it may also be used to reduce the appearance of active (cystic) acne.

The Dermapen device uses an array of fine needles to pierce the skin to a controlled depth just below the outer layer.

The technique (also known as needle dermabrasion) creates a series of wounds or channels into the dermis. As the skin starts to heal itself, it releases growth factors and produces collagen. The skin becomes thicker with the creation of new collagen and elastin fibres, so visibly improving skin texture.

How does Dermapen work for acne?

As a resurfacing treatment for active acne, the ‘micro-channels’ created by the needles can also be used to deliver vitamin A creams that fight the causes and symptoms of acne.

This form of acne treatment uses very fine needles that penetrate just 0.2 mm into the upper layers of skin. It is effective for improving skin texture and mild scarring, and helping to decrease acne breakouts.

Most patients see results within six weeks of the first treatment. The full effect will continue to develop over the course of the following three months.
